SOSA booty shorts – fun!

A beautiful day in NYC.  Drove down from Vermont and got parking right across the street from Capsule.  Met wonderful designers such as Sam Brunson from SOSA with her outrageous chunky hand knit alpaca Booty Shorts, Geoff Poon of Amenpapa, a quirky clothing concept with spirit and soul, and Leah D’Ambrosio’s creative Phili made knits at wol hide.

Lots of great inspirations and such imaginative ways of working with alpaca. I did not see anyone working with the small, fingerling weight alpaca that we use for our intricate, stitch by stitch construction, bright designs and fun patterns.  Can’t wait to get that out to everyone real soon!

Also met Natalie from JUST.  This is a great project that lets shoppers know where their clothes are coming from and what the brand’s social, environmental and economic impact is.

alpaca fleece

The silky luster of alpaca fleece.

Nice day of alpacas grazing in the neighbor’s yard.  KUSIKUY fiber comes from Bolivia which is of finer quality, softness and length than the US alpaca fiber.  It is not known why – perhaps it’s the high altitude in Bolivia, extreme temperature changes (60 degrees during the day and 2o degrees at night), the sparse grasses, arid climate, lack of parasites… For whatever reason, Bolivia’s alpacas have the finest micron count and the most beautiful luster.  So we purchase our alpaca fiber from them.  It is nice to see alpacas here in the US too though, they are such sweet, gentle animals, cousins to llamas and camels.  I wonder if they know they have ancestors high in the Andes mountains so far away…

KUSIKUYColdYesterday it was 30 below zero, but the alpacas at my neighbor’s house were non-plussed about it all.  They had their lightweight, hollow-fiber, super warm coats keeping them cozy.  I had to put an alpaca sweater on my dog though when we went out for a ski across the pond.

Membership

imagesInclusive and connected is how we are feeling.  As KUSIKUY is dusting itself off and getting back into the community we are finding amazing partners.  We are renewing our membership with the Fair Trade Federation, just joined the Aspen Institute and are working to get our paperwork in to re-instate ourselves as a B-Corp and to join the ranks of Vermont Businesses for Socially Responsibility.  Grateful for such a supportive, innovative community on this cozy snowy day.  Snowy barn art complimentary of my neighbor, Wolf Khan.

Coming up on carnaval

Coming up on carnaval

gliten smallThe new samples are almost done – just some minor adjustments on buttons, pom poms and knitting stitches…  But they are almost done.  Here’s photos of the prototypes in Bolivia. Only dynamic now is that Carnaval is almost here too.lue skiesglittenmock  Which means hat all work comes to a halt as costumes are donned, water balloons filled, shaving cream sprayed, animals blessed, and families come together in the countryside to celebrate their good fortune, health and happiness and ask for the eath, mountain and sky spirits, ancestors and Pachamama, to not forget them in the upcoming year as well.  Hyallalla (Cheers! in the Andean language of Quechua).
